Happy Almost Weekend! This weekend, if you are so inclined, head to Shelter Island for the 17th Annual Fall 5K, pictured above. This is sort of like the shorter, off-season cousin of the more glamorous Shelter Island 10k, which is held in June and features linen-clad spectators who cheer runners on while drinking Veuve Cliquot (true). Kids, strollers, dogs are welcome to participate in the 5K, which also includes a post-race BBQ; details here. As an extra incentive, all proceeds go to local breast health organizations. Training, schmaining.

Quick takes

Speaking of Shelter Island, the Chequit Inn — the historic inn that’s been in operation for 120 years or so — has a new fall menu at its Red Maple restaurant. And yes, there are marcona almonds and brisket sliders on it…

Navy Beach restaurant in Montauk, which this year raised over $30,000 this year for the Navy SealFoundation, is officially closed for the season. But the good news is that you can still get your sunset fix (see this photo) at the Inlet, which is open Thursdays thru Tuesdays…

Marco Barrila, the Sicilian-born chef who earlier this year opened farm-to-table Manna restaurant in Water Mill, is taking part in the New York Wine & Food Festival this weekend….

Truffle fries are back at Wolffer Kitchen restaurant in Sag Harbor. We can smell them now…

Big Flower, the boutique in East Hampton owned by Greg and Stacy Ammon, announces that it’s working on its Spring/Summer 2017 collections for men and women….

MSNBC’s Your Business is ready for your closeup. “Pick up your cellphone and take a selfie of you and your business (no professional shots please) and send it to, tweet it to@msnbcyourbiz, or post on Instagram,” the show says while sharing this example. Don’t forget to hashtag it #YourBizSelfie…

On tap for the weekend…

  • Something called the Serpent’s Back Duathlon (we think it’s a bike race) will take place in Montauk on Sunday, 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Let us know how it goes. That would seriously interfere with our bagel-and-coffee time, were we to take part. Details here
  • White Room Gallery in Bridgehampton will open the exhibit “Chasing Beauty” from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday. As always, we hope there’s wine and cheese. If there’s no wine and cheese, the art just doesn’t look as good…
  • Learn to meditate (no experience necessary) at a 10 a.m. Saturday workshop led by Rosalind Brenner at the Kadampa Meditation Center in Sag Harbor. Details here

Social Media Quote of the Day

“The weather’s getting colder but our doors are staying open.” — South Edison restaurant in Montauk, issuing some fighting words via this Instagram post. Respect.
