Weekend Bee: When Life Gives You Limes

Happy Cinco de Mayo! Might we suggest stopping by any of our favorite Mexican haunts this evening: Mercado in Bridgehampton, La Fondita in Amagansett or The Hideaway in Montauk (it’s open!), all of which have holiday specials, including costillas and tamal da rajas con queso and other things we can’t pronounce.

OR if you are planning to make your own margarita, might we suggest Keith’s Nervous Breakdown mixer (this is not product placement), pictured above, which the Hampton Bee recently sampled. It’s a tough job, but someone has to do it, people. We pronounce it delicious, and we are incredibly difficult to please (not really). It is concocted by Keith Davis of the ubiquitous Golden Pear Café — meaning you also support a local entrepreneur. Everybody wins. Except maybe your head on Saturday morning. We hear Davis has two more mixers coming this summer: Rum Punch and Bloody Mary mixer…

And down the stretch they come…

The Kentucky Derby is this weekend. Why we like it: It’s short (the most exciting two minutes in sports!) and comes with its own signature cocktail (hello, mint julep). Where to watch: Montauk Beach House, which is also giving out prizes for best-dressed (keeping it classy), Southampton Publick House, or Starr Boggs in West Hampton, which importantly has hors d’oeuvres. The early favorite is Classic Empire. Our cat has $2 on Gunnevera to win.

Social Media Quote of the Day

“It’s a short season for these babies, get ’em while you can!” Fresno restaurant in East Hampton, posting this lightly battered photo on Instagram. Sometimes it’s good to have a soft shell.
