Festive! We like a surf shop that gets into the holiday spirit. Main Beach Surf & Sport in Wainscott, pictured above, has kicked off its 28th Annual Holiday Sale, which runs until Dec. 31. So if the avid surfer whose name you drew for Secret Santa really, really wants an expensive wetsuit, consider stopping in.
By the way, Main Beach is not just for surfing enthusiasts. It also sells gear and apparel for winter sports, standup paddling and anything active-lifestyle-ish. And rather impressively, it’s open seven days a week, all year long…unlike, say, nearly every restaurant in Montauk. Who needs summer folk anyhow?
Let’s meet for bocce in January
Speaking of sports and staying open for the winter, the East Hampton Indoor-Outdoor Tennis Club plans a massive addition: 10 bowling alleys, two bocce courts, a mini-golf course, a golf simulator, a game room, three pool tables and a sports bar and lounge. The $6 million project could come to fruition by summer 2017 if approved by town and county agencies, reports the East Hampton Star. “There really is nothing much to do for young people out here, especially in the winter,” says Scott Rubenstein, the club’s managing partner. The club will make room for all the new sporting areas by moving its present “bubble” and also ditching its “pickleball” courts, which apparently never caught on. (We didn’t know what pickleball was either; here is a definition. It is not to be confused with a “pickleback,” which is an entirely different thing altogether.)
Speaking of bubbles…
Now, if you want to play hockey this winter, or practice your triple salchow, here’s good news: The Southampton Ice Rink has a jazzy new cover! While perhaps not as exciting as the retractable roof at Wimbledon, the new custom cover will allow skaters to enjoy the rink, regardless of rain or wind. The rink, located alongside the highway in Southampton, claims to be the only covered and refrigerated one on the East End. It’s home to men’s and junior hockey, the Southampton Skating School, public skating — could curling (which we understand is catching on BIG time, unlike pickleball) be far behind? Time will tell.
Social Media Quote of the Day
“The world is filled with nice people. If you can’t find one, be one.” — Local candle company Hamptons Handpoured, in this poster quote on Facebook. And we’ll try to remember this next summer, when we’re cursing at weekend traffic on 27.
